Weekly Update 12/17/10

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

THE SENTRY

By Robert Crais

LIMITED SIGNED EDITION

The Mysterious Bookshop is publishing a special limited edition of this exceptional novel, signed by the author, one of the most popular mystery writers working today. It will be produced in the same elegant format as our previous publications, almost all of which sold out on publication. It will be released before the trade edition is published by Putnam. This is our second book with Robert Crais, following last year’s The First Rule, which sold out shortly after publication.

This edition is limited to only 100 copies, numbered and signed by Robert Crais. Bound in marbled boards with a leather spine. The price is $150.00. There are also 26 lettered copies available at $275.00. Reserve your copy today.

We have mentioned this limited edition before and many of you have already pre-ordered. We do have a note of your pending order. In addition, those of you who subscribe to all our publications are already guaranteed a copy. If any details have changed, please let us know as soon as you can.

EVENT

THE GRAND GAME: A CELEBRATION OF SHERLOCKIAN SCHOLARSHIP. Volume One, 1902 - 1959.

Laurie R. King and Leslie S. Klinger.

The Grand Game is based on the lovely fantasy played by scholars and Sherlockians that Holmes was a real person and that the 60 canonical tales were actually written by Dr. Watson and reflect true historical events. The good doctor was frequently careless in keeping straight the dates and details from one story to the next, leaving the path open for scholars to explain the discrepancies and inconsistencies, stimulating the speculations of distinguished scholars for more than a century, and many of the best of these appear in this volume of classic articles covering the years 1902-1959.

Articles are by such luminaries as Ronald Knox, A.A. Milne, Dorothy L. Sayers, Christopher Morley, Rex Stout, Anthony Boucher, Red Smith, and even Franklin D. Roosevelt. The sixty-six articles contained in this remarkable book are among the best examples of "the grand game" to be produced during the first six decades of the twentieth century.

We are hosting a signing event on Friday, January 7th from 11.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. This will be the culmination of the week-long celebration of Sherlock Holmes’ birthday (see what we mean?), when the Baker Street Irregulars comes to New York for their annual banquet.

Copies of The Grand Game will be signed by both authors. $39.95. In addition, Graham Moore will be here tp sign additional copies of his best-selling mystery The Sherlockian. AND, we have just learned, Otto Penzler’s Sherlockian book, Bohemian Souls, will be published in time for this event and he, of course, will be on hand to sign copies.

SIGNED COPIES NOW AVAILABLE

Loren D. Estleman has already signed copies of The Left-Handed Dollar, his latest Amos Walker novel and sent them back to us. This is our January Hard Boiled Crime Club Main Selection. $24.99

It seems I misspoke when I said we were sold out of first edition of Christmas at the Mysterious Bookshop, edited by Otto Penzler. We did find a small cache, signed by the authors who were here at our Christmas Party. $24.95

We were pleasantly surprised to receive a very few signed copies of Anne Rice’s latest novel, Of Love and Evil. Very few! We also received from her publisher beautiful signed bookplates. If you do not manage to get a signed first edition, please be sure to let us know if you would then like a copy with a signed bookplate. $24.95

NOT SIGNED, BUT...

Hellcats and Honeygirls by Lawrence Block and Donald E. Westlake is the Collected Collaborative Novels of these authors, written when they were young men, starting out. But I’m not going to tell you about that because Lawrence Block has written a terrific introduction to this collection and you’ll want to read what he has to say about their friendship and what writers, real writers, will do to become, and stay, writing. An absolute must for fans of both authors. No. Lawrence Block will not sign copies. $30.00

The Exploits of The Patent Leather Kid by Erle Stanley Gardner, Crippen & Landu, Norfolk, VA. $29.00

Latest in the Lost Classics series. Edited by Bill Pronzini. Fine in dust jacket. Shrinkwrapped.

FOR COLLECTORS

Liquor, Guns & Ammo by Kent Anderson, McMillan, Tucson. 1998. First Trade Edition. SIGNED. $30.00

As new, in dust jacket.

Ariel by Lawrence Block, Arbor House, NY. 1980. First Edition. SIGNED. $45.00

Very fine in dust jacket.

Mostly Murder by Fredric Brown, Dutton, NY 1953. First Edition. $600.00

A very scarce short story collection. A fine copy in dust jacket.

The Glass Rainbow by James Lee Burke, Scorpion Press, Gladestry. 2010. Limited Edition. SIGNED. $150.00

Limited to 75 signed and numbered editions, signed by Burke. With an appreciation by John Connolly. Fine in marbled boards as issued.

The Italian Secretary by Caleb Carr, Carroll & Graf, NY. 2005. First Edition. SIGNED. $30.00

Fine in fine dust jacket.

The Mysterious Mr. Quin by Agatha Christie, Dodd Mead, NY. 1930. First U.S. Edition. $5,000.00

Apart from the ubiquitous bit of fading to the pink spine (much less than usual), this is a fine, fresh copy in a dazzling dust jacket - possibly the best copy on earth (or elsewhere). Twice as expensive as most copies in the scarce dust jacket, but 20 times better.

Amos Walker’s Detroit by Loren D. Estleman, Wayne State University Press, Detroit. 2007. First Edition. SIGNED. $34.95

As it says. Text is by Estleman, photographs by Monte Nagler. Fine in dust jacket

Amphigorey Also by Edward Gorey, Congdon & Weed, NY. 1983. First Edition. SIGNED. $200.00

A handsome, over-sized collection of drawings and illustrated stories. Very fine in price-clipped dust jacket.

Amphigorey Again by Edward Gorey, Harcourt, NY. 2000. First Edition. $35.00

Attractive companion to the above title. Very fine in dust jacket.

Flesh and Blood by John Harvey, Wm. Heinemann, London. 2004. First Edition. SIGNED. $38.00

Fine in fine dust jacket.

Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, Carleton, NY. 1862. First U.S. Edition. $4,500.00

Five volumes. A Haycraft-Queen cornerstone and one of the great novels of the 19th century. This edition precedes the editions of two other American publishers issued in the same year. It was published in the same years as the Brussels and Paris first editions (in French) and the first English edition, published in London. This is an extraordinarily rare book still in the original paper wrappers - the only copy I have ever seen or heard of in my 45 years as a collector and 32 as a bookseller. Rebound copies of the first U.S. edition turn up, and copies in cloth may be found, but never in wrappers. The rear cover of volume 2 has been replaced with matching paper, and there are small chips and tears to all volumes, but it has not been rebacked or restored in any other way and is overall about a very good copy. Possibly unique, but certainly one of the greatest of all rarities for collectors of highspot literature.

Sidetracked by Henning Mankell, Harvill Press, London. 1999. First English Translation. $45.00

Fine in fine dust jacket.

Virgin by James Patterson, McGraw-Hill, NY. 1980. First Edition. $75.00

Author’s fifth book. The basis for the 1991 film Child of Darkness, Child of Light. An exceptionally fine, fresh copy in dust jacket.

The Vampire Archives, by Otto Penzler, Editor, Vintage Crime, New York. 2010. First Edition. SIGNED. $25.00

This copy is signed by Otto and Neil Gaiman, who wrote the Preface. Large paperback format. Fine.

The Devil to Pay by Ellery Queen, Stokes, NY. 1938. First Edition. $650.00

A bit of foxing, and the pale gray linen cloth has darkened, as usual - this is not soiling, but oxidation causing discoloration as on all copies examined - else about fine. The scarce dust jacket is dazzling, without a hint of wear, except that the rear flap inexplicably has been excised and replaced with a photocopy. It looks like the best copy in the world - but it’s not. Still, a difficult book in this condition.

The Hunter by Richard Stark, Pocket, NY. 1962. First Edition. $45.00

First Parker novel by Donald E. Westlake under this pseudonym. A paperback original. About fine - square, tight, no creases - and scarce in this condition.

The Green Eagle Score by Richard Stark, Gold Medal, Greenwich, CT. 1967. First Edition. $25.00

Paperback original. A Parker novel. Bit of soiling, but near fine.

Thurber on Crime by James Thurber, The Mysterious Press, NY. 1991. First Edition. $20.00

Fine in fine dust jacket.

Scotty Scouts Around by Raoul Whitfield, Crippen & Landru, Norfolk, VA. 2002. $25.00

First separate edition. A pamphlet of this short story, originally published in the April 1926 issue of Black Mask magazine. It was issued with the limited hardcover edition of Jo Gar’s Casebook and not available separately. (Pamphlet only). Very fine in stiff wrappers.

Weekly Update 12/10/10

The Mysterious Bookshop’s Christmas Party yesterday evening was a smashing success!

As well, as our loyal local customers, the following authors were here:

Mary Higgins Clark, Lawrence Block, Michael Malone, Jason Starr, Reed Farrel Coleman, S.J. Rozan, Lisa Atkinson, Rupert Holmes, Nelson DeMille, Joe Kanon, Adam Dunn, Lee Child, Megan Abbott, Alafair Burke, Wallace Stroby, Jim Fusilli, Bruce DeSilva, Peter James, Ron Goulart, Thomas H. Cook, Jonathan Santlofer, Lindsay Faye, etc.

If I missed anybody, I apologize.

Contributors who were here signed copies of Christmas at The Mysterious Bookshop edited by Otto Penzler.. We had an enormous number of pre-orders and the authors were extremely patient signing those copies and copies bought by party attendees. We have no more first editions of this title left!

We do however, have a very limited numbered of second editions signed by the contributors.
