NGAIO MARSH
When scholars and critics refer to the greatest British women detective story writers, the first three names that leap to the top of the list are Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers and Ngaio Marsh (1899-1982), the New Zealand author whose tall, lean, handsome, aristocratic detective, Roderick Alleyn appeared in all of her novels. Among the most human of the idealized characters of Golden Age mysteries, Inspector (later Superintendent) Alleyn of New Scotland Yard performs brilliantly without ever condescending to his colleagues or the people with whom he interacts. He is one of the giants of the genre, as is his creator. A word to collectors: Putting together a collection of English first editions in fine condition and in fine dust jackets is virtually impossible. For the pre-WWII titles, you will generally need to content yourself with nice unjacketed copies or first U.S. editions, which aren’t thick on the ground, either.

News About Some Upcoming Books.....
Nine Dragons by Michael Connelly is the latest Harry Bosch mystery and it will be our Crime Collectors Club selection for October.
It is, like The Scarecrow, a UK first we have discovered.
We hate that!
We are still making Connelly the Crime Club selection but I am going to order signed UK editions if that is possible.
If you would like a UK signed edition (no price yet but we’re guessing around $48.00) please let us know so we can order the appropriate quantities from the UK.
Everybody wants a signed edition of Dan Brown’s latest, The Lost Symbol. We have heard from Brown’s publicist and we are told no, no way, nyet. fuggedaboutit! No signings.
We have ordered our copies. If you want to support your favorite independent bookstore, please put in your orders with us so we can make sure that we have ordered enough.
We have first US editions of The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson. This is the second book in the three-book series. $25.95

Bibliomysteries
BIBLIOMYSTERIES
Instead of a specific author this week, we’re again offering some books in one of the most interesting sub-genres of the mystery world, "Bibliomysteries," which are books about books. They may be set in bookstores or libraries, they may involve collectors, librarians or authors, or they may involve rare books or manuscripts, but, for all of us who love the world of books, these are among the most satisfying books in the field, both for readers and for the many collectors who have specialized in these titles. If you would like to put together your own collection of bibliomysteries, whether reading copies or fine first editions, please make contact with Otto, who would enjoy working with you.

Author of the Week: Phoebe Atwood Taylor
PHOEBE ATWOOD TAYLOR
Phoebe Atwood Taylor (1909-1976) wrote her last mystery in 1951 but remained so popular that her regular publisher, W.W. Norton, reissued them all in hardcover. Her series about Asey Mayo, known as "the Cape Cod Sherlock," is noted for its fair play detection and humor, as is the series she wrote about Leonidas Witherall (who looks like William Shakespeare) under the Alice Tilton pseudonym. The following books, except where noted, all feature Mayo and are the handsomely produced matching Norton reprints of the 1960s and ‘70s and are in fine condition in fine or near fine dust jackets (with possibly a bit of wear at spine ends). The Mystery of the Cape Cod Players, 1933. $20.00
The Mystery of the Cape Cod Tavern, 1934. Dust jacket spine a trifle sunned. $20.00

Spring Harrowing, 1939. $20.00
Deadly Sunshade, 1940. $20.00
