Author of the Week: S. S. Van Dine

S.S. VAN DINE

For a decade from the mid-1920's to the mid’30s, the most popular and successful mystery writer in America was Willard Huntington Wright using the pseudonym S.S. Van Dine. A famous and sophisticated critic of literature and art, he was taken ill and, to relieve his boredom, read hundreds of mysteries, decided he could do better than his contemporaries, and created Philo Vance. His editor at Scribners was the legendary Maxwell Perkins, who also published Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Thomas Wolfe. Vance appeared in a dozen novels, all of which became best-sellers (at a time when this was unheard of for detective novels). Many fans of old-fashioned detective stories who like fair-play clues and a superior amateur detective still regard the Philo Vance novels as the best series ever produced by an American.

SIGNED AND NOT SIGNED FROM THE UK

We offer some of the finest books from the UK and, again, we never seem to have enough copies. Not always our fault. The print runs in the UK are small and getting any signed copies in large quantities is difficult.

Blacklands by Belinda Bauer is a first novel attracting much attention. I read it over the last couple of days and it is dark and disturbing and very well done. Young Steve Lamb is obsessed with finding the body of his young uncle who, years ago, was murdered by a serial killer. He digs holes on Exmoor where the killer is reputed to have buried the bodies. Finally, he figures that the best way to find out where his uncle is buried is to go to the source: he writes to the serial killer now serving a life sentence. Then it really begins to get creepy.... Sorry about the price, these signed and lined editions are like gold dust right now. $75.00

Agatha Christie: An Autobiography was first published in 1977. It has now been reissued for a very good reason: in 2008 Christie’s grandson made a remarkable discovery. While clearing out his grandmother’s old house, he came across a box of old reels containing recordings of Agatha dictating her Autobiography to her typist. A CD has been made of those recordings and is included with this version of the Autobiography. This is, of course, not signed. $50.00

Michael Dobbs writes terrific thrillers. His four-volume fictionalized (sort of) account of Churchill during WWII a few years ago is a classic. Now with The Reluctant Hero he updates our conflicts. Zac Kravitz is being tortured in a prison somewhere in the republic of Ta’argistant, which is ringed by high mountains. But he has a friend who has not forgotten him. Harry Jones, along with American-born MP, Martha Riley, is going to get him out. If he can. Signed and dated by Dobbs. $45.00

Heresy by S.J. Parris is a first novel, an historical, getting all kinds of buzz. It is set in Elizabethan times and features Giordano Bruno who has fled the Inquisition to England where he attracts the attention of Francis Walsingham, chief spymaster and sworn enemy of Catholic plotters. The US Edition is the true first, and we have those, but they are unsigned. We have managed to get some of the UK edition which is signed and dated. The author is English. $33.00

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

AGENTS OF TREACHERY

Edited by Otto Penzler

A New Limited Edition

In June, Random House, under its Vintage Books imprint, will publish a trade paperback edition of this important new anthology. It is, believe it or not, the first anthology of original espionage fiction ever published!

Agents of Treachery contains 14 never-before-published stories by many of the world’s best-selling and most distinguished writers of international intrigue, with stories by Lee Child, Dan Fesperman, Joseph Finder, James Grady, Stephen Hunter, Andrew Klavan, John Lawton, Gayle Lynds, Charles McCarry, David Morrell, Stella Rimington, Olen Steinhauer, John Weisman and Robert Wilson.

In April, The Mysterious Bookshop will publish a beautiful limited edition signed by all contributors. Like The Lineup, the first limited edition we published, it will have marbled boards, a leather spine, and will be limited to 250 copies at $150.00 each. In addition, there will be 26 lettered copies at $275.00. This very large (448-page) collection will be the only hardcover edition, preceding the trade edition by more than a month.

We urge you to reserve your copy of this very exciting book now. We had to disappoint many of our customers when The Lineup sold out. You will not be charged until the book is shipped to you. Because of the high quality of the paper and other materials used in the production of this deluxe edition, it is unusually heavy, so shipping will be charged at $10.00 per copy.

We have US first editions. $25.00

Author of the Week: Kathleen Moore Knight

KATHLEEN MOORE KNIGHT

A popular and prolific American writer and a staple of Doubleday’s Crime Club, Kathleen Moore Knight (1890-1984) wrote detective stories and suspense fiction, both under her own name and as Alan Amos. Although mainly associated with New England, fully half of her novels were set in Latin America, where her unattached heroines faced danger. The tone is mildly humorous, much like the work of Phoebe Atwood Taylor. All of the following titles are first editions published in N.Y. by the Doubleday Crime Club.
