SIGNED BOOKS NOW AVAILABLE

Bad Things Happen is a first novel by Harry Dolan featuring David Loogan who writes and then edits for the mystery magazine Gray Streets. David becomes friendly with the magazine’s publisher, Tom Kristoll, and then finds himself embroiled in an affair with Tom’s wife. When people begin to die, detective Elizabeth Waishkey (a wonderfully drawn character) investigates. But David seems to be prime suspect and he needs to find the killer before he becomes the next victim. Nelson DeMille called this book moody and atmospheric, and that’s exactly right. $24.95

The Best American Crime Reporting 2009 is now here. Series editors Otto Penzler and Thomas H. Cook have once again put together the very best in true crime writing. Jeffrey Toobin edits this paperback original. $14.99

The Amateurs by Marcus Sakey tells the story of four friends who, over a few drinks, plan to rob the bar in which they meet every week. It all seems like harmless fun and nobody is supposed to die, so when the killing starts the friends are faced with a moral dilemma. Each one of them is going to have to do the right thing for themselves and for the three others - or not, and each one of them knows that three best friends are going to be making that same choice. A Hard-Boiled Selection. $25.95

Author of the Week: Ellery Queen

ELLERY QUEEN

Among the most popular, famous and influential authors of detective fiction, few could challenge the position of Frederic Dannay and Manfred B. Lee, the Brooklyn cousins who collaborated on scores of books and stories, mainly as Ellery Queen but also on four excellent novels under the Barnaby Ross by-line. Their first novel as Ellery Queen appeared in 1929 and the series about their brilliant, erudite New York amateur detective, also named Ellery Queen, became hugely successful and was reprinted countless times. The early titles, especially, are noted for their bizarre circumstances, including a murder during a Broadway show, in a department store window, in a hospital operating room and on a trolley car. One victim is found nude except for an opera cape on a beach, another is crucified, and another is found with all his clothes on backwards and the entire room in reverse–the rug upside down, pictures facing the wall, etc. In spite of their popularity, or more likely because of it, as their books were read to death, the early Queen books, especially, are very hard to find in nice condition with clean, attractive dust jackets. First editions of the early titles in sharp dust jackets sell for thousands of dollars, if they can be found. Don’t put off ordering your copy....

SIGNED BOOKS NOW AVAILABLE

Gabriel Cohen signed his new Jack Leightner novel, Neptune Avenue. Set in the Russian emigre community of Brighton Beach and the racially charged neighborhood of Crown Heights, Leightner investigates the killings of young women which are being posed as suicides – and the murder of an old friend. $24.95

Edgar Award winner, Jonathon King has written a novel close to his heart. The Styx tells the story of Florida in the 19th century when the destruction of the black community on the new island of Palm Beach made way for the uncommon wealth and privilege that came to the wilderness of Florida. $24.95

UPCOMING SIGNINGS

Joseph Finder will be stopping by at the beginning of next week to sign his latest thriller, Vanished. SIGNED FROM THE U.K.

Free Agent, a first espionage novel by Jeremy Duns, is getting all kinds of positive buzz. Maybe that’s because of the jaw-dropping first chapter! We tried to get signed copies, but were only able to get four copies of the limited edition which is signed across a red "Top Secret" stamp. This edition is also dated. Sorry we can only offer four. $75.00

Bryant & May on the Loose by Christopher Fowler is the seventh in this quirky series featuring the curmudgeonly duo from the Peculiar Crimes Unit. This time out they are investigating a series of murders involving corpses with missing heads. $43.00
