Sally's Weekly Update for 03/25/11

Just like to remind you of my hours. I'm here Monday and Tuesday, out Wednesday and Thursday, and back on Friday and Saturday.

I mention this because if you write to me late Tuesday or early Wednesday, you do not get a reply from me until Friday earliest. I answer emails in the order they are received.

This age of technology has taught us to expect instant communication, so apologies to those of you who think I'm ignoring you. Not true.

Weekly Update 3/25/11

SIGNED COPIES NOW AVAILABLE

Cold Wind is the latest Joe Pickett thriller from C.J. Box. When Earl Alden is found hanging from a wind turbine, his wife Missy is arrested for murder. Unfortunately for Pickett, Missy is his mother-in-law and he heartily dislikes her. But then things happen that make him wonder if she is being set up. $25.95

The Savage City by T.J. English is a fascinating account of New York City during a troubled decade beginning in the early 1960s. From the Black Panther movement and the Career Girls Murder case through the Knapp Commission hearings on police corruption, English describes a city always on the edge. This non-fiction account reads like a thriller. $27.99

The Silent Land by Graham Joyce tells the story of Zoe and Jake Bennett on vacation in a French ski resort who are buried in an avalanche but who dig their way out. What awaits them is a completely silent world; their hotel is empty and the town is empty, apparently evacuated. This is a real page turner; you’ll think you can figure out what has happened, but you’ll probably be wrong. $23.95

Twice a Spy is Keith Thomson’s second thriller featuring retired CIA officer Drummond Clark and his son Charlie who are on the lam in Switzerland. While NSA operative Alice Rutherford works to exonerate them from criminal charges, Charlie helps Drummond undergo an experimental treatment for Alzheimer’s. Then Alice is kidnapped and Charlie and Drummond must find her - and one of them can no longer trust his own mind. $25.95

Moondogs is a first novel by Alexander Yates. Benicio travels to the Philippines to meet with his father, Howard, from whom he’s been estranged, but Howard is missing. The search for Howard uncovers the truth about his womanizing and suspicious business deals. Helping Benicio with his search are a variety of colorful characters including Reynato Ocampo, the local celebrity-hero policeman, slippery politicians, a scheming lady-of-the-night, and a handful of harried diplomats. $25.95

SIGNED FROM THE U.K.

The Hanging Shed is a thriller from first-time author Gordon Ferris. This came to my attention because it is number one on the Amazon list in the UK. So why all the fuss? It is set in Glasgow in 1946 - a dark time in a dark city - the war is over and Douglas Brodie is back home. But the war was not kind to his friend Hugh Donovan who is mutilated and horribly burned. So when a local boy is found raped and murdered, there is only one suspect... And Brodie is determined to save him from the gallows. $40.00

Prophecy by S.J.Parris is the second in the series set in the time of Elizabeth 1 and featuring Giordano Bruno, the maverick and charismatic agent of Sir Francis Walsingham, spymaster to the Queen. His mission is to secure the evidence that will allow the execution of Mary Stuart and her cohorts for treason. Meanwhile, a maid of honor to the Queen has been murdered. This is a terrific series and a must for fans of C.J. Sansom. $33.00

Little Girl Lost is a stand alone from Brian McGilloway. A child is found wandering, her hands covered in blood which is not her own. The only person she seems to trust is Detective Sergeant Lucy Black, the officer who rescued her, but DS Black is baffled when she is removed from a high-profile case involving the kidnapping of a prominent businessman’s teenage daughter. This crime thriller about corruption, greed, and vengeance is limited to 300 signed and numbered hard cover editions. $43.00

PRE-ORDERING FROM THE U.K.

There are a couple of very exciting titles being published in the U.K. this Spring and Summer. They will not be selections of the British Crime Club, so we’d like to ask you to pre-order them in order to get as close as possible to the number we need:

Bad Signs by R.J. Ellory

One of our most popular UK writers has a new thriller set in the 1960s.

The Stranger’s Child by Alan Hollinghurst

This is the author’s first novel in seven years - his last, The Line of Beauty, won the Man Booker Prize in 2004. Although not a mystery, The Stranger’s Child tells the story of two families spanning the 20th century written by one of the most talented writers working today.

SIGNED COPIES NOW AVAILABLE

Live Wire by Harlan Coben does not go on sale until next Tuesday, but our signed copies are here. This thriller featuring Myron Bolitar will be sent out just as soon as, so if you have not already ordered your copy, you may do so now. $27.95

Cara Hoffman will be back in the store today to sign more copies of her first novel, So Much Pretty. She signed last week and we sold out immediately. This title is now in its third printing, so this batch of first editions will be the last we can offer. The story, about the disappearance of two young women, is told through the words of several narrators and the writing of former journalist Hoffman has been compared to Joyce Carol Oates and Joan Didion. An Unclassifiable Crime Club Main Selection. $25.00

As you can see above, Nathan Larson will be here discussing his first novel, The Dewey Decimal System, a first novel, part-biblio mystery, part thriller, which takes place in New York City after a terrorist attack and a flu epidemic. When we first read this book, we wanted to offer it as a selection for our First Mystery Club so asked the publisher if they would be willing to publish a limited hardcover edition. There is now a hardcover edition limited to 169 copies, most of which will be going to our club members, but we do have some copies remaining so first come first served. A First Mystery Crime Club Main Selection. $50.00

When Joyce Carol Oates was here recently she signed The Inevitable, an anthology of writing about death. We were hoping that Bradford Morrow, the editor, and Peter Straub, a contributor, would come by to sign, but that doesn’t look as though it is going to happen. So...signed by JCO only. Trade paperback original. $17.95

Always a pleasure to see Ian Rankin here in New York. He stopped by to sign copies of the U.S. edition of The Complaints, which introduces Detective Malcolm Fox, a member of the division known as the Complaints. $24.99

While he was here, Rankin signed copies of a book which we have been holding for some time. The collector’s edition of his first Rebus novel, Knots & Crosses, was published in 2007 and is now available signed with Rankin’s noughts and crosses illustration. It contains a new introduction by Rankin. $35.00

The Terror of Living by Urban Waite is a thriller which will remind some readers of No Country for Old Men. That’s because the thrilling chase across the Western landscape by a violent man who leaves a trail of victims in his wake is reminiscent of that story. But this is a first time writer who is getting rave reviews from Stephen King, Michael Koryta, Daniel Woodrell, and our own Otto Penzler. $24.99

This week, the movie The Lincoln Lawyer opens and this is a good time to remind you that in 2008 Michael Connelly wrote a dual biography of Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller for our profile series. Printed dos-a-dos with Connelly’s signature in the middle, this is limited to 350 numbered copies, some of which are still available. $75.00

We have one of the 26 lettered copies available. $125.00

Weekly Update 3/11/11

SIGNED COPIES NOW AVAILABLE

Jasper Fforde dropped by to sign the U.S. Edition of One of Our Thursdays is Missing. This is the latest in his biblio series featuring literary detective Thursday Next. In this installment, Thursday has disappeared right before peace talks are scheduled to begin in order to avert a genre war. The written character of Thursday, who minds her own business at the quiet end of speculative fiction far from the grim specter of remaindering, investigates the disappearance of her namesake. This is a Soft Boiled Crime Club Main Selection. $25.95

What You See in the Dark is the first novel of Manuel Munoz and it is receiving terrific reviews. It tells the story of Teresa and Dan, young romantics in 1950s Bakersfield who fuel local gossip until a famous actress comes to town with a legendary director to make a groundbreaking movie about madness and murder at a roadside motel (yes, THAT movie). This is part thriller, part love story, and part exploration of the dark side of the American dream. $23.95

Our Joyce Carol Oates event went swimmingly:

Give Me Your Heart is her latest collection of short stories about the obsessive, the unpredictable, and the self-destructive need for love. $25.00

A Widow’s Story tells of the sudden death of her husband of forty-six years and the immediate effect that had on her life. $27.99

Shortcut Man by P.G. Sturges is another first novel. This one, set in the underbelly of Los Angeles, features Dick Henry, known for fixing problems quickly and discreetly. But his latest assignment from porn producer, Artie Benjamin, is a complicated one and Dick must not only get the job done, but also avoid being killed in the process. Just a few of this title, with the signature on a tipped in page.$24.00

Touch by Alexi Zentner is a beautifully written first novel (a big favorite of both Ian and Sally) set in Sawgamet, a north-woods boomtown gone bust. Stephen, a pastor, returns with his wife and family to comfort his dying mother. There he relives the tales told to him by his grandfather, the founder of the town, and the painful loss of both his father and his sister. A beautiful, well-told story. $24.95

PLEASE NOTE - WE ARE SOLD OUT!

We are already receiving inquiries about The Tiger’s Wife by Tea Obreht based partly on the near-rave review in the New York Times this morning from Michiko Kakutani. We did offer copies of this title about a month ago and it is being signed today. It has now gone into its seventh printing (in a week) and we can get no more first editions.

I

f you are in The First Mystery Club it is your main selection this month. If you responded to the Update in the last four weeks, a copy is pending for you.

One of the most popular pulp writers of his time, he was an important contributor to Black Mask and most of the top pulps of the 1930s and ‘40s; he was also a historian of the pulp era and wrote frequently on the subject. Additionally, a large number of his books qualify as bibliomysteries, particularly those about Simon Lash and the encyclopedia salesmen, Johnny Fletcher and his sidekick, Sam Cragg.

The French Key Mystery, Farrar & Rinehart, NY. 1940. First Edition. $175.00

The Navy Colt, Farrar & Rinehart, NY. 1941. First Edition. SIGNED. $125.00

Johnny Fletcher, the fantastic book salesman, and the muscular Sam Cragg find themselves mixed up with gun collectors, literary ladies, schools for scenario writers and other oddballs. Pale grey covers soiled, else very good copy in dust jacket which has chips at spine ends and along folds.

The Mighty Blockhead, Farrar & Rinehart, NY. 1942. First Edition. $175.00

Fletcher and Cragg put on their bookselling act at a cocktail party for the assembled publishers and artists of "Blockhead" the famous comic strip character. Very fine copy in dust jacket with chips at top of spine and on front panel.

Another man tries to sell a copy of the same book to a second-hand dealer, and a box that belonged to a member of the Donner party turns up. A trace of rubbing to spine ends, else a fine, crisp copy in a price-clipped dust jacket which has light chipping at spine ends.

The Gift Horse, Farrar & Rinehart, NY. 1942. First Edition. $100.00

After an unexpected opportunity to sell books at the race track, Fletcher is given a racehorse named Ulysses, with enough money to support it, but there’s always a catch. Foxing to endpapers, else a fine copy in a dust jacket that is chipped at top of spine.

The Silver Tombstone, Farrar & Rinehart, NY. 1945. First Edition. $45.00

Fletcher and Cragg are selling books in Tombstone, AZ. Fine in dust jacket with heavy chipping to spine.

The Whispering Master, Farrar & Rinehart, NY. 1947. First Edition. $50.00

The publisher of the book that Fletcher and Cragg sell goes missing. Bottom edge shelf-worn, else very good in dust jacket that is chipped at spine ends and along bottom edges.

The Honest Dealer, Rinehart, NY. 1947. First Edition. $75.00

Fletcher and Cragg get mixed up with murder in Las Vegas. Minor bibliophilic content. Fine in dust jacket, which has a tape repair along top of spine and some staining on back panel.

Murder ‘97, Rinehart, NY. 1948. First Edition. $150.00

Simon Lash is hired to trace the ownership of a copy of Horatio Alger’s Ralph Raymond which had been inscribed "to Stuart from Aunt Clarissa." A fine, fresh copy in a bright dust jacket with just a trace of wear.

The Leather Duke, Rinehart, NY. 1949. First Edition. $35.00

When their publisher doesn’t get books to them, Fletcher and Cragg take a job in a leather factory. Minor bibliophilip interest. Unaccountably scarce. Very good in trimmed dust jacket with stain to edge of front flap.

The Limping Goose, Rinehart, NY. 1954. First Edition. $75.00

Down on their luck as usual, booksellers Fletcher and Cragg have taken a temporary job as collection agents and run into trouble when they accept a goose as payment. Very fine in dust jacket, which has sunned spine.

Joyce Carol Oates

Give Me Your Heart: A Collection of Short Stories $25.00

A Widow’s Story $27.99

Please note that we cannot guarantee that Ms. Oates will be able to get to all of your copies of her books sent in for signature. We have received rather a lot, and we will have to be mindful of her schedule. If your books are not signed, you may leave them with us for the next visit - sometime in the Fall we think.

What she will be signing, as well as the above two books, is her contribution to a paperback original: The Inevitable: Contemporary Writers Confront Death. This will also be signed by Bradford Morrow who co-edited this collection. We are also hopeful that Peter Straub will be able to stop by in the next couple of weeks to sign. $17.95

Place your orders for one or all of the above books.

SIGNED COPIES NOW AVAILABLE

Linda Fairstein has signed copies of her latest thriller featuring prosecutor Alexandra Cooper. In Silent Mercy, Alex investigates two murders - one in Harlem’s Mount Neboh Baptist Church, the other at a cathedral in Little Italy. Because of the apparent differences in the victims’ beliefs, Alex is ruling out a religious motive, but she is convinced that another young woman is going to die at one of Manhattan’s many houses of worship.
