Cara Hoffman will be back in the store today to sign more copies of her first novel, So Much Pretty. She signed last week and we sold out immediately. This title is now in its third printing, so this batch of first editions will be the last we can offer. The story, about the disappearance of two young women, is told through the words of several narrators and the writing of former journalist Hoffman has been compared to Joyce Carol Oates and Joan Didion. As you can see above, Nathan Larson will be here discussing his first novel, The Dewey Decimal System, a first novel, part-biblio mystery, part thriller, which takes place in New York City after a terrorist attack and a flu epidemic. When we first read this book, we wanted to offer it as a selection for our First Mystery Club so asked the publisher if they would be willing to publish a limited hardcover edition. There is now a hardcover edition limited to 169 copies, most of which will be going to our club members, but we do have some copies remaining so first come first served. When Joyce Carol Oates was here recently she signed The Inevitable, an anthology of writing about death. We were hoping that Bradford Morrow, the editor, and Peter Straub, a contributor, would come by to sign, but that doesn’t look as though it is going to happen. So...signed by JCO only. Always a pleasure to see Ian Rankin here in New York. He stopped by to sign copies of the U.S. edition of The Complaints, which introduces Detective Malcolm Fox, a member of the division known as the Complaints. $24.99
While he was here, Rankin signed copies of a book which we have been holding for some time. The collector’s edition of his first Rebus novel, Knots & Crosses, was published in 2007 and is now available signed with Rankin’s noughts and crosses illustration. It contains a new introduction by Rankin. $35.00
The Terror of Living by Urban Waite is a thriller which will remind some readers of No Country for Old Men. That’s because the thrilling chase across the Western landscape by a violent man who leaves a trail of victims in his wake is reminiscent of that story. But this is a first time writer who is getting rave reviews from Stephen King, Michael Koryta, Daniel Woodrell, and our own Otto Penzler. $24.99
