Weekly Update 5/20/11

SIGNED COPIES NOW AVAILABLE

Chris Adrian, one of The New Yorker Magazine’s young gifted writers dubbed "20 under 40," signed copies of The Great Night. On Midsummer’s Eve in 2008, three people are trapped in San Francisco’s Buena Vista Park. Here, Adrian will weave their stories with those of Titania, Oberon, and their court, as he retells Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. $26.00

Lawrence Block, who is a seriously funny man, was here signing copies of his new Matthew Scudder book, A Drop of the Hard Stuff. Those of you who asked for signed first editions (we thought we might run out) will be getting them. We also have a few signed firsts left! A Crime Collectors’ Club Main Selection. $25.99

A Conflict of Interest by Adam Mitzner is picking up some stunning reviews. This first novel is a legal thriller, is being compared by some to Turow’s Presumed Innocent. A First Mystery Club Main Selection. $25.00

Jo Nesbo, one of the hottest writers at work today, dropped by the store to sign copies of The Snowman. Although this thriller features Harry Hole, it can be read as a stand-alone. A customer remarked to me "...a serial killer, lots of blood, well-written. I think you’ll like it Sally." Yes, I think I will. A Hard Boiled Club Main Selection. $25.95

SIGNED FROM THE U.K.

The Hypnotist by Lars Kepler is the latest Scandinavian crime thriller to make big news. Set in Sweden, it introduces Detective Inspector Joona Linna who is investigating a triple murder, all the same family. The killer is at large but it looks as if the eldest sister escaped the carnage. The son has also survived but he has shut down, comatose with shock. Linna calls on a disgraced hypnotist to help. Lars Kepler is the name of a husband and wife team and, having just read it, I can tell you that this is one of best constructed, goriest, well-translated thrillers I’ve read lately. $35.00
