Weekly Update 5/27/11

SALLY GOES TO EXMOOR!!

Not a mystery, but very exciting nevertheless. At least for Sally. Her vacation will be a 77 mile hike on the Tarka Trail which winds across the moors of North Devon in England towards the Bristol Channel. The trail is named for Tarka the Otter (a children’s book written by Henry Williamson in 1927) who fled across Exmoor to escape hunters. The story does not end well for Tarka. Why are so many children’s books heartbreaking?

But I digress. I will be away from the store from Sunday, June 5th, returning on Friday, June 17th.

I will be sending out a Weekly Update on Friday, June 3rd and you can catch me then or the next day, Saturday June 4th.

We will skip a Weekly Update on June 10th.

Normal service will resume on Friday, June 17th.

In my absence, please contact Ian, Dan, or Otto. If you are a Crime Club Member, please mention that fact, so that orders, changes, etc. can be put on your file and communicated to me.

SIGNED COPIES NOW AVAILABLE

Michael Koryta stopped by and signed copies of The Ridge, the author’s latest thriller which, like So Cold the River and The Cypress House, contains more than a dash of the supernatural. The on sale date of this thriller is June 7th, but please order your copies now. $24.99

In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson tells the story of William E. Dodd, who was America’s ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in 1933. Dodd is disturbed by what he witnesses in the Third Reich. Not so his daughter, Martha, who is entranced by the parties and the handsome young men dedicated to restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Larson is a prominent chronicler of historical events whose bestsellers have included Isaac’s Storm and The Devil in the White City. $26.00

Eric Van Lustbader is signing even as I type! The ink is not yet dry on Blood Trust, a McClure/Carson thriller. When Alli Carson, FBI agent, becomes a murder suspect, she and National Security Adviser Jack McClure begin a treacherous journey that leads them into the heart of the international slave trade. $25.99

Edgar Award-winning author Stefanie Pintoff signed copies of her third book featuring Detective Simon Ziele. Secret of the White Rose is set in 1906 in New York City where Judge Hugo Jackson has been murdered. Since Jackson was presiding over the trial of Al Drayson, an anarchist who set off a bomb at a Carnegie family wedding, Ziele must steer the investigation past the rounding up of the usual suspects in order to look at all possible motives for the murder. $24.99
