Sadie Jones is not as well known here as she is in her native England but her third book is intriguing and should bring her a wider audience. The Uninvited Guests is set at the country house of Sterne in 1912 where preparations have begun for an elegant party to honour Emerald Torrington’s twentieth birthday. But only a few miles away, a dreadful accident propels a crowd of mysterious and not altogether savoury survivors to seek shelter at the Manor throwing the household into confusion and mischief. "..a brilliant novel...At once a shimmering comedy of manners and disturbing commentary on class." Ann Patchett.
Tom-All-Alone’s (mercifully, that title will change when the book is published here in the U.S) by Lynn Shepherd is set in London in 1850 where the lawyer Edward Tulkinghorn has a deadly secret he must conceal. That secret is now under threat from an unseen adversary. Who better to track that person down than Charles Maddox? Unfairly dismissed from the Metropolitan Police, Charles is struggling to establish himself as a private detective, so he takes Tulkinghorn’s case and finds out that nothing is as it seems. Inspired by Bleak House by Charles Dickens, Tom-All-Alone’s is a gripping murder mystery set in a London underworld that Dickens only hinted at. $33.00

The Lifeboat by Charlotte Rogan is less a mystery, more a novel of moral dilemmas.
